News from the Mayor

As the weather is starting to improve and The Parade works nearing completion, I am feeling really quite excited about the programme of Big Events we have created for the new performance space at the top of the pond. It’ll be at least one major event every month, starting with The Big Launch in June, coinciding with our 4th Imagine Watford Festival.

There are many other events that go on across Watford, held by local organisations and community groups. Some happening this weekend follow further down this email.

The line up looks set to be:

June 20 and 21: The Big Launch – a series of specially commissioned performances, made exclusively for Watford.

July 12: The Big Dance: Once Upon A Time in Watford in association with dance digital and Watford Palace Theatre.

July 19: The Big Family Sports Day in association with Everyone Active and Watford Football Club. Fun for everyone to celebrate a summer of sport

July 30 to August 3: Big Screen on the Parade – classic movies shown on a big screen

September 13: Party by the Pond in association with Vibe 107.6 – live music and local talent

September 27: The Big Catwalk in association with Intu – outdoor fashion show

October 4: Watford’s Big Draw – arts and crafts on a big scale for all the family

November 16: Diwali on the Parade and a Festival of Light

December: Watford’s Big Skate, festive skating in The Parade.

Tomorrow (22nd March) from 10.30am to 4pm, at Watford Museum, Mandy Latham will be exhibiting her beautiful handmade shawls, baby gift baskets and knit wear. There will also be scrumptious homemade cakes and fairtrade coffee for sale throughout the day.

This Sunday (23rd March), the British Record Shop Archive will be popping up at the LP Cafe from 12- 4pm to collect archivable items related to record shops in Watford. Dig out your record shop related stuff, celebrate record shop heritage and share your memories with the British Record Shop Archive curator.

The Garston Ladies Football Club (GLFC) is a fantastic organisation that has been going strong for nearly 18 years. They are hosting a Pamper Evening fundraiser, where they will have numerous beauty and hair treatments on offer as well as stalls such as Jamie Oliver Home Cooking, Jewellery, and Bake Off. It’s on Saturday April 5th from 7pm at the Greenwood Park Community Centre in Chiswell Green – I’ll be there to judge the bake-off!

An exhibition of photographs by Raffi Katz capturing the atmosphere of the wilder parts of Cassiobury Parkand the lesser known outskirts of Watford will be on display at the museum from Saturday 3rd April to Saturday 26th April. The exhibition will be accompanied by a Friends of Watford Museum talk on Friday 11th April at 2pm. Admission is free for Friends and £3 for members of the public.

You can keep up to date through the events calendar on the Watford Borough Council website.
