News from the Mayor

NEW MARKET IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Very pleased to have the new Watford market open and trading, in the grounds of the TJ Hughes building.  The official launch event is taking place on Friday 31st October, by which time all the traders – a mix of new and old – should be in and trading.  There are lots of fun activities planned to make it an exciting launch, kicking off at midday, including cooking demonstrations by celebrity chef Rosemary Schrager.

GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW CENTRAL WATFORD SCHOOL
I was really pleased to hear that the plans for the new primary school in Central Watford, St John’s Church of England Primary, have had the green light for government funding, with a view to it being open in 2016.  It will be two form entry, providing an additional 60 places a year for local children.

I have backed Father David Stevenson from the outset as we need more school places in Watford.  It’s not  a problem unique to Watford – it’s a national problem.  We have been working with the County Council, who are the education authority, to provide new sites for them to build on, for example we’ve freed up land at Orchard school for an expansion, at Ascot Road too for a new school, and there’ll be more school places provided via the Health Campus.

NEXT BIG EVENT: THE BIG SKATE
Ever since the rise in popularity of outdoor festive ice skating at the likes of Somerset House, residents have been asking me, ‘why can’t we have an ice rink’? The answer was that we didn’t have the space.  But NOW we do, because we created an events space as part of The Parade redevelopment.

It will be open on Saturday 22 November until Sunday 4 January 2015 (closed on Christmas Day but open on Boxing Day). Prices, which include skate hire, start at £5 for children and a family of four can skate for £20. Sessions on the ice last for 45 minutes and it will be suitable for all ages.  Tickets are available now via the Box Office at Watford Palace Theatre: Call 01923 225671 or book online at www.watfordpalacetheatre.co.uk
