In very heavy rain the river overflows on the footpath. Will this work reduce the capacity further meaning flooding will happen more often?
Brushwood berms are held low in the channel so in high flows water passes over the top, all such works require EA flood defence consent (now environmental permitting) and a method statement. We need more SuDS type schemes, most of our rivers ecosystems are struggling to cope with misconnections, litter and urban run off. Yes but will this stop the flooding? Why is everything made so complicated with a lot of flowery language? Clearing out all the ‘islands’, the trees and rushes and bushes that have grown into the river and cut down the flow are the problem. Dredging is the answer which would give a clear flow to the water and reduce flooding. The river used to be a beautiful clear boating area. Now it looks like the upper reaches of the Amazon!
I think this is a great idea and look forward to seeing more wildlife as a result
