Cattle at Hayden Hill

Re: Cattle at Hayden Hill/ Attenborough Fields arriving this week in top field near greenway

Dear Local Resident,

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves as the new graziers of Attenborough Fields.

We have been farming at Watergate Farm, near Leighton Buzzard for nearly 100 years, and had Red Poll cattle for 11. We have extensive experience of managing them to perform conservation grazing, and do this across a number of sites for the Wildlife Trust as well as the Greensand  Trust.

The cattle themselves are perfect for performing this role, as they are very docile around people using public footpaths. They are a traditional native breed that are central to the pastoral heritage of East Anglia, as well as being hardy and of a modest size. By grazing rough pasture, they help to allow a wide variety of wild flowers and other species to flourish, as well as creating an effective carbon sink. The cattle have been very successful at several agricultural shows that we exhibit at, and we have found that local residents become very fond of seeing them on their regular walks around the sites.

The cattle are used to dogs but please keep them under control for the welfare of both the dogs and cattle. We will place laminated signs on each kissing gate informing walkers that cattle are on the site.

If you have any questions or queries about the cattle or site then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Sally, David, John & Anna Hunt

We found them slightly intimidating. My grandson of 2 ran towards me and one chased after him, stared at me but because I showed no fear didn’t advance any closer. Some people behind me were standing very still because they came right up to them, Just feel nervous now going for a walk where they are. Can you give any assurances about them.
